INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Officials say a 7-year-old boy has drowned at an Indianapolis waterpark.

The incident occurred just before 2:30 p.m. Saturday at the Indy Island Aquatic Center at Raymond Park on the city's far eastside.

According to information provided by the Indianapolis Fire Department, witnesses said the boy may have suffered a medical incident that caused him to go into/under the water. He was noticed under the water simultaneously by a 10 year old child and a lifeguard who alerted other guards, and then jumped into the 6-foot-deep pool to retrieve the boy.

The lifeguard pulled the boy to the surface and was assisted by other lifeguards to bring the boy out of the pool and onto the deck. Firefighters said CPR was in progress when they arrived, in addition to the use of the AED.

The boy was taken by ambulance to Riley Hospital for Children where he was later pronounced dead.

The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department is investigating the incident. IFD has offered the Indy Island staff the assistance of its Peer Support team to assist with critical incident de-briefing and support.

Indy Island is an indoor aquatic center under the Indy Parks and Recreation umbrella. It's adjacent to Raymond Park Middle School.
