Gentrification of urban neighborhoods often leads to a rapid rise in property values. Now an Indianapolis city-councilor wants to try to protect long-time residents of those neighborhoods by limiting the increase in property taxes.

An Indianapolis city council committee Monday advanced a resolution supporting a retail workers bill of rights after Republican councilors blocked the resolution earlier this month.

Indianapolis city councilors are criticizing another contract Mayor Greg Ballard has signed over electric vehicles. The two sides are already headed to court over Vision Fleet, which is providing new cars to city employees. Now, contention is growing over BlueIndy, the electric car sharing programs for residents that's about to launch.

The Indianapolis City-County Council debated and advanced several measures at its July meeting, but few have any solid legal impact. The council advanced a move against BlueIndy electric rental cars, mandatory reporting of stolen guns and the first major overhaul if zoning laws in four decades. It also urged banks to do more to take care of abandoned properties stuck in foreclosure purgatory.

Indianapolis city councilors and the mayor's office are fighting over funding for the city's police force again, this time it's over money the mayor removed from IMPD's general fund.
