Forecasters are warning of more severe weather, including tornadoes, Tuesday and Wednesday in parts of the South and Midwest hammered just days ago by deadly storms.

Gov. Eric Holcomb toured some of the destroyed neighborhoods in the south side of Sullivan, Indiana, on Saturday after signing an executive order declaring a state of emergency in Sullivan and Johnson counties.

Residents across a wide swath of the US South and Midwest raced to assess the destruction Sunday wreaked by storms that dropped possibly dozens of tornadoes and killed at least 26 people in small towns and big cities.

Three people died in Indiana's Sullivan County, near the Illinois line about 95 miles (150 kilometers) southwest of Indianapolis.

Unrelenting tornadoes that tore through parts of the South and Midwest have killed at least 11 people.

Thousands of homes and businesses were in the dark Wednesday in northeastern Indiana after waves of storms damaged trees and power lines while swamping some areas with 9 inches of rainfall.

The National Weather Service says a 98 mph wind gust was recorded at Fort Wayne International Airport, the strongest wind the airport has ever recorded.

High heat and humidity can be life threatening for pets, too, and local ordinances are specific when it comes to taking care of dogs in extreme heat.

One of the storms tore roofing and siding from four homes, threw sheet sheet metal, moved a storage shed 40 feet off its foundation, tore roofing from a fire station and caused minor damage to a school in Rush County.
